摘要
Canada'sborealforestrepresentsanimportantcontributoroftheworld'swoodsupplyindustry.However,maintainingorincreasingproductivityoftheborealforestmaybechallenginginareasdominatedbyforestedpeatlands.Moreover,sustainablemanagementoftheseforestsmustalsoconsiderotherimportantaspectsoftheforestecosystemsuchasbiodiversityandcarbonsequestration.Toaddresstheseconcerns,ecosystem-basedmanagementhasbeenimplementedinsomeCanadianjurisdictions,suchasinregionswherealargeportionoftheborealforestisdominatedbyforestedpeatlands.Theobjectivesofthispaperare(1)tosummarizeourcurrentunderstandingofhownaturaldisturbancesinfluencestanddynamicsandbiodiversityinforestedpeatlands,and(2)toreviewthemaindifferencesbetweennaturalandmanagedforeststandswithrespecttosoil.properties,standproductivity,understoryplantcommunities.Wealsodiscusshoweven-agemanagementregimesucceedsorfailstopreserveoldforestsandhowthislossaffectsbothforeststructureandhabitatdiversityatthelandscapelevel.Weconcludebyshowinghow,inborealforestedpeatlands,forestmanagementcouldcontributetocarbonsequestrationandmitigateprojectedclimatechange.
