摘要
Throughoutthehistory,arbitrarinessputforwardbySaussurehasbeenregardedasoneofthemostdesigningfeaturesoflanguage.Saussureclaimedthatthereisnointerrelationshipbetweenthesignifierandsignified,orsuchrelationshipcan’tbetestifiedbutconventional.Later,thefamouslinguistsPeirceandHaiman,whohavemadegreatcontributiontotheever-heatedtheoryoficonicity,revealanotherfeatureofthelanguage.Thepurposeofthispaperisnottodenythearbitrarynatureoflanguage,buttosuggestthatthenatureoflanguageisacombinationofarbitrarinessandiconicity.
