摘要
Whenyoumentionlexicology,absolutelyitisabranchoflinguistics,inquiringintotheoriginsandmeaningsofwords.ThelexicologistMcCarthy(1990)havegivenushisopinionaboutit.Hesaid,grammarisimportant,anditindeedplaysavitalroleinEnglishstudy,butthatisnotall.Infact,tarfromthis.Fromthiswecansee,vocabularyandthestudyandlearningofvocabularytakeanoutstandingplaceinthestudyoflanguage,itwillimprovehisskillsofusingreferencebooksandraisehisproblem-solvingabilityandefficiencyofindividualstudy.Anditwillmakeyoumuchmorereceptiveandproductiveinlanguageprocessingandlan-guageproduction.KnowledgeofEnglishLexicologycanofferagreathelptotheworkoftheteachersofEnglish.Armedwiththisknowledge,theycanbettercontroltheteachingmaterials,especiallytheconcerningwords.Theycanalsoselectandorganizemate-rialstoteachinamoreeffectiveway.Whatismore,theycanmakeuseofthedifferentsenserelationstogroupvocabulary,inter-pretwordsandexplainmeaningstothestudents;Atlast,theirteachingwillprovebetteriftheyhavetheknowledgeofdictionaries.Inmythesis,Iwilltalkabouthowtodealwithnewwordsinmaterial.
