Thespudcanfoundationhasbeenwidelyusedinoffshoreengineeringforjack-uprigs.However,'punchthrough'failureoftenoccurswhereastrongersoillayeroverlaysasoftersoillayer.Inthisstudy,spudcanpenetrationintodoublelayeredsoilsisinvestigatednumerically.Thesoilprofileissetupasastrongersoillayeroverlayingasoftersoillayer,withthesoilstrengthratio(bottomsoilstrength/topsoilstrength)variedfrom0.1to1.0(1meansuniformsoil).Thebearingbehaviourisdiscussedandthebearingcapacityfactorsaregivenforvariouscasesinvolvingdifferentlayerthicknessesanddifferentstrengthratiosofthetwoclaylayers.Thedevelopmentoftheplasticzonesandtheeffectofsoilselfweightonthebearingcapacityarealsodiscussed.Fromthisstudy,itisfoundthat,whenaspudcanisdistantfromthesoillayerboundary,thespudcancanbeanalysedwithsinglesoillayerdata.However,whenaspudcanbecomesclosertothesoilboundarylayer,theinfluenceofthelowersoftsoillayerissignificant,andthebearingcapacityofthespudcandecreases.Thecriticaldistanceisanindicationoftheoccurrenceof'punchthrough'failure.Thecriticaldistancebetweenthespudcanandthelayerboundaryislargerforaroughspudcanthantheoneforasmoothone,andthecriticaldistancedecreaseswithincreasingsoilstrengthratio.Thedepthofcavityformedduringinitialspudcanpenetrationdependsonthetoplayersoilstrength,soilstrengthratioandunitsoilself-weight,andthecavityaffectsthespudcanbearingbehaviouraswell.
