ObjectiveToinvestigatetheprotectiveeffectsofsoundconditioningagainstsubsequenthigh-levelnoisetraumainrats.MethodRatswereexposedtoa4kHzoctavebandnoiseat95dBSPLfor10hours,thentoatraumaticexposuredose(105dBSPLfor13hours)delivered12hlater.Controlanimalswereexposuredtothetraumaticdoseonly.ABRthresholdswereobtainedbeforeandafternoiseexposure.ResultAnimalsthathadbeensoundconditioneddemonstratedlessABRthresholdshiftcomparedtothosethathadnot.ConclusionModeratelevelsoundexposureappearstohaveatougheningeffectontheratcochlea(or'conditioning')leadingtodecreasedhearinglossfromsubsequenttraumaticexposure.
