摘要
PassageOnePubliccollegesanduniversitiesintheUS,subsidizeddirectlybystategovernments,arecapturinganexpandingshareofenrollment.Atthebeginningofthiscentury,morethan80percentofstudentswereenrolledinprivatecollegesanduniversities.Bythemiddleofthecentury,thefigurehadfallentoabout50percent.Fromthe1960son,thistrendhasaccelerated.By2000,thecompositionhadreverseditselffromthebeginningofthecentury,withfouroutoffivestudentsenrolledinpublicuniversities.Duringthethreedecadesfrom1965,thepublicsectorabsorbedmorethan86percentofthehighereducationenrollmentincrease.
