Anumericalstudybasedonawakeoscillatormodelwasconductedtodeterminetheresponseperformanceofvortex-inducedvibration(VIV)onalongflexiblecylinderwithpinned-pinnedboundaryconditionssubjectedtolinearandexponentialshearflows.Thecouplingequationsofastructuralvibrationmodelandwakeoscillatormodelweresolvedusingastandardcentralfinitedifferencemethodofthesecondorder.TheVIVresponsecharacteristicsincludingthestructuraldisplacement,structuralfrequency,structuralwavenumber,standingwavebehavior,travellingwavebehavior,structuralvelocity,liftforcecoefficientandtransferredenergyfromthefluidtothestructurewithdifferentflowprofileswerecompared.ThenumericalresultsshowthattheVIVdisplacementisacombinationofstandingwavesandtravellingwaves.Forlinearshearflow,standingwavesandtravellingwavesdominatetheVIVresponsewithinthelow-velocityandhigh-velocityzones,respectively.Thenegativevaluesofthetransferredenergyonlyoccurwithinthelow-velocityzone.However,forexponentialshearflow,travellingwavesdominatetheVIVresponseandthenegativeenergyoccursalongtheentirelengthofthecylinder.
