简介:Withtherapiddevelopmentofsiliconchiptech-nology,web-basedinstruction(WBI)andcomputer-izedadaptivetesting(CAT)willbethenewtrendsinthefieldoflanguageteachingandtesting.Weassumethatonlywhenteachingandtestingsharethesameviewaboutthenatureoflanguageandlanguagelearn-ingcantestingexerciseabeneficialbackwasheffectonteaching.However,WBIandCATprovetobebasedonoppositetheoriesoflanguageandlanguagelearn-ing.WhileWBIbelievesinconstructivism,CATcor-respondstostructuralismandbehaviorism.Thissitu-ationplaceslanguagetestersinadilemma,foriftheyfollowthetrend,testingwillgoagainstteaching.ButiftheygiveupCAT,itisverydifficulttosubstituteanothertestingsystempossessingsomanyadvantages.ThispaperillustratesindetailwhyWBIandCATaretobecomethenewtrendsinteachingandtesting,ex-plainsclearlythediscrepancybetweenWBIandCATintheoryandtheirobjectivesandfinallyattemptstoprovideasolutiontohelpthelanguagetestersoutofthedilemma.
