简介:ThedevelopmentofearthquakeengineeringinChinaisdescribedintothreestages.Theinitialstagein1950's-1960'swasmarkedwiththeinitiationofthisbranchofsciencefromitscreationinthefirstnational12-yearplanofscienceandtechnologybyspecifyingearthquakeengineeringasabranchitemandIEMwasoneparticipant.Thefirstearthquakezonationmapandthefirstseismicdesigncodeweresooncompletedandusedinengineeringdesign.Siteeffectonstructuraldesignandsiteselectionwereseriouslystudied.ThesecondstagemarkedwiththeoccurrenceofquiteafewstrongearthquakesinChina,fromwhichmanylessonswerelearnedandcorrespondingconsiderationswerespecifiedinourdesigncodesandfollowedinconstructionpractice.Thethirdstageisastageofdisastermanagement,whichismarkedbyaseriesofgovernmentdocumentations,leadingbyanationallawofthePeople'sRepublicofChinaontheprotectingagainstandmitigatingearthquakedisastersadoptedatthemeetingoftheStandingCommitteeoftheNationalPeople'sCongressofthePeople'sRepublicofChinain1997,andthenfollowedbysomeprovincialandmunicipallawstoforcetheactionsoutlinedinthenationallaw.Itmaybeexpectedthatoursocietywillbemuchmoresafertoresisttheattackoffuturestrongearthquakeswithlesslosses.Lastly,possiblefuturedevelopmentsarealsodiscussed.
简介:Inhighlypopulatedurbancenters,traditionalseismicsurveysourcescannolongerbeproperlyappliedduetorestrictionsinmoderncivilianlifestyles.Theambientvibrationnoise,includingbothmicroseismsandmicrotremor,thougharegenerallyweakbutavailableanywhereandanytime,canbeanidealsupplementarysourceforconductingseismicsurveysforengineeringseismologyandearthquakeengineering.Thisisfundamentallysupportedbyadvanceddigitalsignalprocessingtechniquesforeffectivelyextractingtheusefulinformationoutfromthenoise.Thus,itcanbeessentiallyregardedasapassiveseismicmethod.Inthispaperwefirstmakeabriefsurveyoftheambientvibrationnoise,followedbyaquicksummaryofdigitalsignalprocessingforpassiveseismicsurveys.ThentheapplicationsofambientnoiseinengineeringseismologyandearthquakeengineeringforurbansettingsareillustratedwithexamplesfromBeijingmetropolitanarea.Forengineeringseismologytheexampleistheassessmentofsiteeffectinalargeareaviamicrotremorobservations.Forearthquakeengineeringtheexampleisforstructuralcharacterizationofatypicalreinforcedconcretehigh-risebuildingusingbackgroundvibrationnoise.Byshowingtheseexampleswearguethattheambientnoisecanbetreatedasanewsourcethatiseconomical,practical,andparticularlyvaluabletoengineeringseismologyandearthquakeengineeringprojectsforseismichazardmitigationinurbanareas.

简介:Internationallyearthquakeinsurance,likeallotherinsurance(fire,auto),adoptedactuarialapproachinthepast,whichis,basedonhistoricallossexperiencetodetermineinsurancerate.Duetothefactthatearthquakeisarareeventwithsevereconsequence,irrationaldeterminationofpremiumrateandlackofunderstandingscaleofpotentiallossledtomanyinsurancecompaniesinsolventafterNorthridgeearthquakein1994.Alongwithrecentadvancesinearthscience,computerscienceandengineering,computerizedlossestimationmethodologiesbasedonfirstprincipleshavebeendevelopedtothepointthatlossesfromdestructiveearthquakescanbequantifiedwithreasonableaccuracyusingscientificmodelingtechniques.ThispaperintendstointroducehowengineeringmodelscanassisttoquantifyearthquakeriskandhowinsuranceindustrycanusethisinformationtomanagetheirriskintheUnitedStatesandabroad.
