简介:CottonplaysavitalroleintheEgyptianeconomybymeetingdomesticandexportdemands,contributingsignificantlytoagriculture,industry,exportearnings,andprovidingacashincometoroughlyonemillionsmallfarmers.ThispaperexaminesthecompetitivenessofEgyptiancottonexports(ECE)intheinternationalmarketduringtheperiod1990-2006.Itmainlyaimsatinvestigatingthetrendsincottonexportsoverthestudiedperiod,analyzingthecompetitivepositionofEgyptiancottonbyemployingseveraleconomicandtradeindices,andidentifyingthekeyfactorsthatinfluenceEgypt'scottonexportstotheworld.TheresultsrevealedthatthetotalquantityofECEhasfallenfrom196.8thousandtonsin2003to87.2thousandtonsin2006.ItalsoshowsahighdegreeofgeographicconcentrationofECE,intoIndia,Italy,theRepublicofKorea,andJapan.Together,thesemarketsimportedabout50%ofECEduring1990-2006.ThecompetitiveadvantageofEgyptiancottonwouldappeardependentonqualitynotprice.Japan,theRepublicofKoreaandItalypresentedthemoststablemarketsforECE.LinearregressionanalysissuggeststhataonepercentincreaseintheEgypt-to-USAexportpriceratioleadstoadecreaseinECEbyabout27.8thousandtons.SuchanalysishasalsoshownapositiveandsignificanteffectoftheWorldTradeOrganizationonECE.
