WeretrospectivelyanalyzedthetemporalandspatialvariationsoffourdifferentphysicalparameterscharacterizingthestateoftheatmosphereandionosphereseveraldaysbeforetheM9Tohoku,JapanearthquakeofMarch11,2011.Thedataincludeoutgoinglongwaveradiation(OLR),GPS/TEC,lowerEarthorbitionospherictomographyandcriticalfrequencyfoF2.OurfirstresultsshowthatonMarch7tharapidincreaseofemittedinfraredradiationwasobservedfromthesatellitedataandananomalydevelopedneartheepicenter.TheGPS/TECdataindicateanincreaseandvariationinelectrondensityreachingamaximumvalueonMarch8.StartingfromthisdayinthelowerionospherealsotherewasconfirmedanabnormalTECvariationovertheepicenter.FromMarch3to11alargeincreaseinelectronconcentrationwasrecordedatallfourJapaneseground-basedionosondes,whichreturnedtonormalafterthemainearthquake.ThejointpreliminaryanalysisofatmosphericandionosphericparametersduringtheM9Tohoku,Japanearthquakehasrevealedthepresenceofrelatedvariationsoftheseparametersimplyingtheirconnectionwiththeearthquakeprocess.Thisstudymayleadtoabetterunderstandingoftheresponseoftheatmosphere/ionospheretothegreatTohokuearthquake.
