Photoacousticophthalmoscopy(PAOM)isanovelimagingmodality,whichiscapableofnon-invasivelydetectingopticalabsorptionpropertiesintheretina.WevisualizethemicrovasculatureinretinaandchoroidinalbinomouseusingPAOMguidedbyspectral-domainopticalcoherencetomography.Sincealbinomousecharacterizesbylackingmelanininretinalpigmentepithelium(RPE),PAOMilluminationlasercanpenetratethroughtheRPEontochoroid,andconsequentlyprovidesvolumetricvisualizationofchorioretinalvasculaturesasaresultofstronghemoglobinopticalabsorption.Thehigh-qualitychorioretinalmicrovascularimagingacquiredbyPAOMimpliesitsgreatpotentialinunderstandingpathologicalmechanismsanddevelopingtherapeuticstrategiesformajorchorioretinaldiseasesthatcorrelatewithvasculardisorders.
