Thispaperdescribesthedesignandfabricationofarangeof‘gascell'microtargetsproducedbytheTargetFabricationGroupintheCentralLaserFacility(CLF)foracademicaccessexperimentsontheOrionlaserfacilityattheAtomicWeaponsEstablishment(AWE).TheexperimentswerecarriedoutbyanacademicconsortiumledbyImperialCollegeLondon.Theunderlyingtargetmethodologywasanevolutionofarangeoftargetsusedforexperimentsonradiativeshocksandinvolvedthefabricationofaprecisionmachinedcellcontaininganumberofaperturesforinteractionfoilsordiagnosticwindows.Theinteriorofthecellwasgas-filledbeforelaserirradiation.Thispaperdetailstheassemblyprocesses,thinfilmrequirementsandmicro-machiningprocessesneededtoproducethetargets.Alsodescribedistheimplementationofagas-fillsystemtoproducetargetsthatarefilledtoapressureof0.1–1bar.Thepaperdiscussesthechallengesthatareposedbysuchatarget.
