Accordingtothemostrecentepidemiologicaldata,theprevalenceofhypertensionrangedfromabout25%inChineselivingeitherinthemainlandorinTaiwanandKoreans,toapproximately40%inMongolians.Thecontrolrateofhypertensionwasabout35%inKoreansandJapanese,24%inMongolians,andlessthan10%inChinese.Fourplacebo-controlledtrialsinChinaunequivocallyprovedthatantihypertensivetherapymaypreventstrokeandothercardiovascularcomplicationsinhypertensionorpatientswithahistoryofstrokeortransientischemicattack.Fouractively-controlledtrialsinJapandidnotshowsignificantdifferencebetweenvariousclassesorcombinationsofantihypertensivedrugs.TwotrialsthatcomparedintensivewithlessintensivebloodpressurecontrolinelderlyJapanesehypertensivepatientsdidnotshowfurtherbenefitofcontrollingsystolicbloodpressuretoalevelbelow140mmHgincomparisonwithbloodpressurecontroltoalevelof140mmHgorabove.Thesetrialsthatcomparedvariousclassesofantihypertensivedrugsorintensivewithlessintensivebloodpressurecontroloftenhadsmallsamplesizeandhenceinadequatepowertodetectmodestormoderatebenefit.ThereisstillaneedforhighqualityoutcometrialdatainEastAsians.
