Supercontinuum(SC)generationhasattractedasignificantscientificinterestinthepastdecadesduetoitspromisingapplicationscoveringthefieldsofmetrology,spectroscopy,defense,aswellasmedicaltreatments.Todate,researchersaredevotedtoimprovingthespectralwidthandflatnessofSCgenerationbyusingspecialtyopticalfibers.Theflatnessofthespectrumisofimportancebecauseitcanimprovetheaccuracyofmeasurementinpracticalapplications.ThispapersummarizesthetheoryofSC,thestateoftheartofflatSCgenerationusingopticalfiberincludingphotoniccrystalfibers,softglassfibersaswellasgermania-dopedfibers,andsuggeststhefutureresearchdirectionofflatSClightsource.
