Theabilitytomodulateanopticalfieldviaanelectricfieldisregardedasakeyfunctionofelectro-opticinterconnects,whichareusedinopticalcommunicationsandinformation-processingsystems.Oneofthemaindevicesrequiredforsuchinterconnectsistheelectro-opticmodulator(EOM).CurrentEOMsbasedonelectro-opticandelectro-absorptioneffectsoftenarebulkyandpower-inefficientduetotheweakelectro-opticpropertiesoftheirconstituentmaterials.Here,weproposeanewmechanismtoproduceanarbitrary-waveformEOMbasedonquantuminterference,inwhichbothrealandimaginarypartsofthesusceptibilityareengineeredcoherentlywithsuper-highefficiency.BasedonthisEOM,awaveforminterconnectfromthevoltagetothemodulatedopticalabsorptionisrealized.Weexpectthatsuchanewtypeofelectro-opticinterconnectwillhaveabroadrangeofapplications,includinginopticalcommunicationsandnetworks.
