简介:Theeffectsofbiomimeticdesignsoftinefurrowopenersurfaceonequivalentpressureandpressureinthedirectionofmotiononopenersurfaceagainstsoilwerestudiedbyfiniteelementmethod(FEM)simulationandtheeffectsofthesedesignsontoolforceandpowerrequirementswereexaminedexperimentally.Geometricalstructuresofthecuticlesurfacesofdungbeetle(CoprisochusMotschulsky)wereexaminedbystereoscopy.ThestructuresofthecuticlesurfacesandUltraHighMo-lecularWeightPolyethylene(UHMWPE)materialweremodeledonsurfaceoftinefurrowopenerasbiomimeticdesigns.SevenfurrowopenerswereanalyzedinANSYSprogram(aFEMsimulationsoftware).ThebiomimeticfurrowopenersurfaceswithUHMWPEstructureswerefoundtohavelowerequivalentpressureandpressureinthedirectionofmotionascomparedtotheconventionalsurfaceandtothebiomimeticsurfaceswithtexturedsteel-35structures.ItwasfoundthatthetoolforceandpowerwereincreasedwiththecuttingdepthandoperatingspeedandthebiomimeticfurrowopenerwithUHMWPEtubularsectionridgesshowedthelowestresistanceandpowerrequirementagainstsoil..

简介:Fourdifferentstructuralmodelsofartificialjointsweredevelopedandthefiniteelementmethod(FEM)wasemployedtoinvestigatetheirmechanicalcharacteristicsunderstaticanddynamicconditions.ThematerialsusedintheFEMcalculationwereultra-highmolecularweightpolyethylene(UHMWPE),316Lstainlesssteel,CoCrMoalloyandTi6Al4Valloy.Thestressdistribution,strain,andelasticdeformationunderstaticanddynamicconditionswereobtained.Analysisandcomparisonofthecalculationresultsofdifferentmodelswereconducted.Itisshownthatwiththesameparametersthemodelofametallicfemurheadcoveredwithanartificialcartilagelayerismoresimilartothestructureofthenaturalhumanjointanditsmechanicalcharacteristicsarethebestofthefourmodels.
简介:Climbingrobotsareofpotentialuseforsurveillance,inspectionandexplorationindifferentenvironments.Inparticular,theuseofclimbingrobotsforspaceexplorationcanallowscientiststoexploreenvironmentstoochallengingfortraditionalwheeleddesigns.Toadheretosurfaces,biomimeticdryadhesivesbasedongeckofeethavebeenproposed.Thesebiomimeticdryadhesivesworkbyusingmulti-scalecompliantmechanismstomakeintimatecontactwithdifferentsurfacesandadherebyusingVanderWaalsforces.Fabricationoftheseadhesiveshasfrequentlybeenchallenginghowever,duetothedifficultyincombiningmacro,microandnanoscalecompliance.Wepresentanallpolymerfootdesignforusewithahexapodclimbingrobotandafabricationmethodtoimprovereliabilityandyield.Ahighstrength,low-modulussilicone,TC-5005,isusedtoformthefootbaseandmicroscalefibresinonepiecebyusingatwopartmold.Amacroscalefootdesignisproducedusinga3Dprintertoproduceabasemold,whilelithographicdefinitionofmicroscalefibresinathickphotoresistformsthe‘hairs’ofthepolymerfoot.Theadhesionofthesiliconefibresbythemselvesorattachedtothemacrofootisexaminedtodeterminebeststrategiesforplacementandremovaloffeettomaximizeadhesion.Resultsdemonstratethesuccessfulintegrationofmicroandmacrocompliantfeetforuseinclimbingonavarietyofsurfaces.
